Bhavan's Varuna Vidyalaya, Thrikkakara
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan founded by Dr K M Munshi is a movement, a mission, where the ancient learning and modern intellectual aspirations combine to create a new history. Bhavan's Varuna Vidyalaya is a joint venture of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and NPOL [Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory].The school was formally inaugurated on 13th June 1992, by Dr. V. K. Aatre, Chief Controller, R & D, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, at a function presided over by the then Chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Justice T. L. Viswanatha Iyer.
Bhavan's Varuna Vidyalaya initially had a strength of around 120 students and 10 teachers. The first batch of Std X students appeared for the Board exams in 1998 and the first batch of Std XII students (Science stream) appeared for the Board exams in 2000. The school started the commerce stream in the Senior Secondary level in 2006.
Presently, the school with an area of 12140.56 sq.metre has classes from I to XII with student strength of 993 and 53 teachers. Bhavan's Varuna Vidyalaya is proactive in ensuring the overall development of children. The inherent talents of the students are nurtured through a plethora of cultural activities integrated in the school curriculum. These activities include debate, drama, arts, dance, music and craft. The school hosts an annual cultural event called 'INSIGNIA' conducted by the students of Std XI, which helps to develop their organizational skills. 'Vigyanotsav' an annual Inter-School Science Exhibition is held to develop the scientific temperament among students.
Bhavan's Varuna also conducts the Varuna Cup Volleyball Tournament and the Varuna Cup Chess Tournament. 'SEED' programme in collaboration with 'Mathrubhumi' which aims at environmental conservation, 'EDUMISSION VARUNA', a project to help needy children with study materials, "Naam Onnu", a service project in which food grains and daily essential kits distributed during the festive season of Onam to needy people are a few our other activities of the school.
At Varuna, the day begins with a Sanskrit prayer followed by a prayer in Hindi or Malayalam. Each class is assigned duties for a whole week to reiterate the national pledge, to read out the news and the thought for the week.
One day each is set apart for each of the four languages taught in school-English, Hindi, Malayalam and Sanskrit. After the students disperse from the assembly area and reach their classes, a ten minute meditation is observed. Yoga is also given great importance in the curriculum. Students actively take part in yoga sessions held in the school as well as the competitions. All important days are observed in the assembly.
In 2022 the Smart Interactive Flat Panels were installed in the classrooms to help our students to keep abreast with the technology, and become digitally dynamic. The computerised library boasts of over 10000 books. The well-equipped labs-Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Math and Computer plays a key role in providing hands-on experience by applying their theoretical knowledge to solve practical problems. The resource room, with well-qualified special educators, facilitates the learning process of those children with specific learning disabilities. A stationery store that is run by the members of the Mahila Vibhag of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan also functions in the school.The school counsellor provides social and emotional support to create a seemless and friendly environment in the school.
